The video features Geamăna, a village in north-west Romania, now entirely submerged by the waste of copper mining. I first learned of this story through videobloggers documenting a trip around Romania on YouTube and was struck by the haunting beauty of its ruins. All the drone footage is compiled from their channels, and falls under fair-use policies. After gathering the clips, I researched the village’s history and edited the videos with overlaid text explaining its story.
I then composed a soundtrack by combining sampled instruments, synthesis, and recordings of my voice (multitracked humming used as harmonic support). I used a combination of sampled instruments such as Spitfire’s LABS alongside Logic Pro’s stock plugins.
The project spanned from January to September, composed through COVID-19 lockdown and the summer holidays. Except for the final mix, the entire compositional process was done from my laptop in my bedroom at home.
