My focus in writing this piece was exploring the relationship between dissonance and consonance.
When writing this piece, I was really influenced by Joe Hisaishi’s quartal piano voicing. The opening falling motif is reminiscent of Kurtág, and the climactic gestures informed by Wagner’s orchestral writing. Shostakovich’s iconic use of brutalisation and Takemitsu’s polyphonic textures also provided a springboard for the ideas in writing this piece.
