In the generous acoustics of York’s spectacular fifteenth-century Guildhall, The 24 is delighted to feature two unusual masses. The significant commission by four professional choirs from one of the most notable Finnish composers of recent times, Einojuhani Rautavaara, is heard possibly for the first time in the UK. At times symphonic and textural, it could not be more different from Palestrina’s classic work for Pope Marcellus – beautifully arranged a few years after his death for double-choir by Francesco Soriano.1
